This morning when I went to look for my baby that is almost six months old. My wife and I recently had our fourth child and something remarkable happened and almost instantly I heard the voice of God in my heart.
My daughter was laying on the carpet and looking over. Before I even walked over, she started kicking and her hands are flicking out like this. I don’t know if you have children, perhaps you would know what this is. She’s just had all her strength, all her might, she’s going boom! Boom! Her legs were kicked out. Her hands were stretched out like this because she was so excited to see me!
So I was like, “Oh baby, you’re excited to see dada?” And she didn’t just do it one time. Her arms flicking out all like this, her legs are kicking out. And I’m not saying that she has not done it in the past. She has. But that day she did it with such great fervor and great strength. I was like “Wow, this is so great!” And it just blessed my heart. I was so happy!
Be Excited in God’s Presence
And so at that moment, I feel like I’m hearing God say the same way to me, “Hey, this is how I want you. This is how I want my children to come into my presence: with excitement, with joy, with thankfulness, wanting to see me not to seek after me, not to pursue me or pray in a way that it’s like a religious duty.
And you know what? The great thing is, just a couple of days ago, I was praying. I was asking the Holy Spirit, “Holy Spirit, what does it mean to love you with all my strength?” Because I was looking in the scripture, it says you shall love the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
I was asking the Holy Spirit, how do I love You? How do I love God with all my strength? And just a day later He answered my prayer and my baby was kicking out with so much for us. So much joy. I wish I had captured that on video. But the moment was enough for me to imprint it in my brain for the rest of my life.
Today when you come into your prayer or you go to church and worship God, what is your attitude? Many times I go to church service, I see someone holding a coffee in her hand while the worship is going on and then their hand is in their pocket and it’s like, “Oh well this is going to be over.”
And many times when I lead the worship, I’m in the platform, I’m singing, worshiping God and I’ll say things like, “Hey guys, let’s give the Lord a shout! Let’s pray to Jesus! Let’s lift up our hands and worship!”
And some people surely they would do that. But most people, just stand there and “worship” like this (blank face). I don’t know how they’re singing. I couldn’t hear them. But in my mind I’m thinking, do they really have no energy? Do they really have no excitement? No thankfulness for God who saved them out of the pit of hell into His everlasting kingdom?
Are you guys really transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit? Have you truly been saved? Do you even know what God has done in your life? And to tell you the truth, unfortunately, I was one of those people down there in the past having an attitude like, “Oh well, this is going to be over today.”
What is True Worship?
When we worship God, it’s not dependent on how we feel like, “Oh God, I worship You. If you give me the best job, if you give me the best relationship, the amount of money that I want and desire and need, if everything is fulfilled, then I will give You worship.” That is NOT worshiping that is self-worship!
True worship says, God, you are Lord of all, no matter what happens. I thank You for what You’ve done on the cross for me. And if You have done nothing else for me other than the cross, I praise You and I thank You that You have not just done what You’ve done on the cross for me because in my life my testimony is a witness that You’ve done so much, so much, so much, so much, so much more, than what you’ve done on the cross of Calvary.
When I was on the road driving, so many times you prevented an accident and preserved my life. And many times when I was in trouble that I’m not even aware of, You’re protecting me so many times when the devil wants to take my life. And at times when I’m backslidden, but You won’t let them so that I can come back to You and serve You today. God, I thank You. And I say Hallelujah!
When was the last time you raised up a shout to God and said, Jesus, thank You! Thank you for what You’ve done. Thank You that You’ve cleansed my sins. Thank You for the salvation of my family. Thank You for the people that You have healed through my hands. Thank you for the people that You set free through the power of the Gospel and Your Name.
God, I don’t want to be indifferent in my faith, as if this is something that I’m going to take for granted. And in the times when I’ve lost sight of this, God, help me come back to You.
And so my question to you is this: How have you loved God with all your strength? King David in 2 Samuel 6:14, danced undignified in the presence of God because the Ark of the Covenant is coming back to Jerusalem. He is celebrating. He put aside his own royal robe as a king and he danced before God. And even though his wife despised him for doing that, people think that “Well, why are you doing that as a king?” He didn’t care because he wanted to honor God! He wants to praise him. That the presence of God and that the Ark of the Covenant is with us again.
Sometimes people say, “Well, that’s just not my personality to raise up my hand or to lift up a shout to God. That’s just not me. I don’t do that.” And in the past, I used to think the same way. Why are these people yelling? How do they praise the Lord? What are you doing man? Lower it down because I come from a culture and especially in the more conservative denomination where they just sing from these hymn books.
And I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that. But is there a point in our lives when we break out of our comfort zone? We break out of a tradition? We break out denomination? And we say, “God I want to honor You, I want to praise You.”
Because if you say that this is not you, this is not who you are, then I want to ask you, when you watch the Olympics, when you watch your favorite sports team, I see people lose it – “Go!! Yeah!!! Man, what??? This referee is wrong!” They act like they’re crazy and they’re yelling, they’re crying, they’re getting drunk and doing all these things.
“Christians” doing that and yet on Sunday, they’ll stand before our holy God with a coffee in their hand and they stand as if He’s not there.
God, we ask for Your mercy. We ask for Your grace. We ask Holy Spirit, You continue to reveal to us how we can love You with all the strength because You’re looking for those who worship You in spirit and in truth. And even if sometimes we feel like we’re jumping out of the box, we will give You our praise. We’ll give You honor and we will worship you with our strength, with stamina, with energy, because You’re worthy of our praise!
My Encouragement to You
And I encourage you to try it next time. If you still feel awkward doing it in public, start with your private prayer time. This is always the way you should start or else, it will be a fake thing that you’re trying to perform in public. In your private time clap your hands, say “God, thank You.”
Put on some worship music. Blast it, so your neighbors can hear it! I love doing that. Blasting worship music, praying in tongues, worshiping God, saying “God, thank You! Hallelujah!” Lift up your praise and before you know it, I can tell you, you’ll experience the presence of God. Sometimes tears are falling off your face and you’re like “God, thank You so much.”
And sometimes you feel His peace, His joys, His forgiveness in you. Sometimes He speaks to you through His word and you start to have this sweet fellowship, speak communion with God. Because God didn’t just say that scripture is some kind of a legalistic command because it is His promise that when we seek Him and search for Him with all our heart, we will find Him.
And how many people need to find God today? Not just unbelievers, especially Christians. So many Christians need to find God today because they’re just living a life that has religious routines, but they have not truly encountered the power of the living God.
May we make sure our faith is genuine until Jesus comes back!
