Do you want to grow closer to God? Because if you do, in this article I’ll give you eight scriptures and four ways on how to grow closer to God. If you’ve ever wondered how to hear God, how to hear His voice, and how to sense His presence, and know that He is there with you – read this article until the very end and you will discover how to do that.
Know the Reason Why You Want to be Closer to God
The first way to know how to grow closer to God, believe it or not, is not HOW – it’s the WHY. Know why you want to grow closer to God.
Because in Isaiah chapter 55:6-7 it says that:
“Seek the Lord while He may be found, and call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord and He will have mercy on him.”
You want to draw closer to God because you want to do it while He may be found. Currently, we’re still in the time frame of grace that Jesus hasn’t come back yet.
Because one day, the bible tells us in Revelation that Jesus will come back on the white horse to judge the whole world and to make war on the whole world. That day hasn’t come yet.
And so today, when we still have the chance to repent and turn to God, you want to seek Him while He may be found. That’s what God tells us.
And in James 4:8 it says:
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, and don’t be but double-minded.”
The bible says that if we draw near to God, it is His promise that He will draw near to us. Take that scripture to you. Today, when you say “God, I draw near to You, I thank You that your promise is that You will draw near to me that I can hear Your voice and I can feel Your presence.”
And not just feel them, that you know that His presence is there with you. And in 2nd Chronicles 7:14 it says that:
“If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face. Then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Today, if you want to grow closer to God, first humble yourself, pray, and seek His face and say “God, I believe Your word. That You are here. That when I draw near to You, You are with me; which brings us to the second point.
You Have to Know that God is There With You
In Matthew chapter 6:6 it says:
“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
The moment you go into your secret place – whether it’s putting a blanket over your head, whether it is closing the door in your room, whether it’s something private, whether it’s in your car, or when you have closed the door, locked it.
The bible tells us, Jesus says that the Father is in the secret place. How great is that? When you draw close to God, you have to believe that God is there, which is Hebrew 11:6:
“Without faith, it is impossible to please God. For he who comes to God must believe that He is.”
You have to know that when you go into your secret place when you pray, when you draw close to Him – He is there.
Sometimes you may feel – Hey, I’m trying to grow closer to God, but I can’t hear Him. I don’t even know if is He is listening. I don’t know if He can hear me or if He knows what I’m going through here.
Well, that’s a problem. First, change your mind. Believe the scripture that says, when you go into your secret place, when you shut the door, when you close your eyes and you pray to God. Know that He is already there.
You have to come to God and believe that He is. Because without faith, it is impossible to please God. How would you feel if you’re with your friend and he’s always acting as if you’re not there? Man, I’m wondering when you’re gonna come. I’m wondering when you’re gonna talk to me. It’s not going to feel very good.
Acknowledge your friend is there. Acknowledge God is there, coming to your prayer time, say “God, I thank You that you hear me” the same way Jesus pray, “Father, I thank You that You always hear me For the sake of these people, I’m gonna pray it out loud. But even if I don’t pray it out loud, I know You always hear me.” that’s what Jesus said.
Today, thank God that we got to thank You that you hear me because of Jesus, because of what He has done on the cross, that I can come to the secret place. That I’m washed clean by the blood of Jesus. That I can come into Your throne boldly to ask for grace when I need them. I thank you, God. Acknowledge that He is there.
This is one of the most key things that you need to do if you want to grow closer to God to acknowledge Him because God honors faith and He honors when you believe His word and act on it.
Intense Desire and Persistence
The third way on how to grow closer to God is to have an intense desire and to be persistent about it. The scripture that we just read earlier Hebrew 11:6, it says:
“God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
Not just this casual attitude. There’s one time I talked to a pastor and I was a little bit surprised. He says, “Well you know if the Holy Spirit wants to fill me with the Holy Spirit, great. If I speak in tongues, great. If I don’t speak in tongues, no problem.”
You can’t go and seek after the things of God with a passive casual attitude, because you’re not gonna get it. It is the promise of God that He will only reward those who diligently seek Him.
Are you diligently seeking Him today? Or if you’re saying, “Oh God, after you know, maybe 10 episodes on tv, then I will go seek You.” Well, no wonder you don’t hear God.
But if you want to hear God, say “God, I set aside this time. This is my priority before I do anything in the morning. I give You 15 minutes, half an hour, an hour” whatever it is you said before God. “God, I want to be here with You because I want to find You. I want to get close to Your word. I want to hear what You want to say from heaven through Your word and through however You want to communicate Yourself to me. I’m here.”
If you have that intense desire and persistence, God will speak to you. Jeremiah 29:13, says:
“You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”
You don’t like it when you have a friend or if your spouse comes to you and they don’t really love you with their whole heart. They just love you half-heartedly. They talk to you – they’re looking on their phone. They’re going out with you, your friends, or whoever it is, they’re on the phone, they’re not really giving you attention. Their body is there, but their mind is somewhere else.
You don’t enjoy that. And so, God doesn’t enjoy that either. Today, we’re going to give God our all.
That’s why the bible says to love the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. All of us.
Many times we fall short and have to say, “God, I will repent. Help us to live a life that pleases You, and to honor You, and to love You the way that You want us to love You.” Because when we do that, when we have an intense desire and persistence, we will be able to grow closer to God because He is there with us. He is in a secret place.
If you want to draw closer to God, you have to be humble. The bible says this in James 4:6:
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
I can tell you that there are different times I’ve spoken to people. Some of them may have been Christians before and now they don’t believe anymore, or some of them are struggling to believe God because they haven’t really experienced Him. And when I asked them, well, what have you done in your faith? How have you sought God?
And I remember one example, this person told me, “Well, you know, I just said God, if You’re real, You come down and show me Yourself in the flesh, physically. Then I’ll believe in You.” in a very prideful attitude.
And I try to tell this person. Hey, listen, if you seek after God in such a fashion, you’re not going to hear Him. Today, we don’t go boss God around. We don’t demand Him to “You show Yourself and prove to me.”
While I tell you sometimes there are some people who hear God in this way. God then reveals Himself to them, whether it’s through a dream, through a vision. But generally speaking, it is the promise of God that when you’re proud, when you’re prideful, God is not going to speak to you.
So they say, God, is there any pride in my heart? Whether it’s self-righteousness, whether thinking that you’re better than other people, other Christians, get rid of that, and say, God, I humble myself before You. I acknowledge Your word, which says the last becomes 1st and the 1st will become last.
For anyone who wants to become the master of all, let him be a servant. because Jesus says, “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
We have to look at Jesus as our example. He is the Son of the living God. Yet He emptied himself. Emptied Himself of His divine nature and became a man, and obeyed God, and obeyed Him to a point. So that you and I today can have eternal life. Because of what He’s done on the cross. Because He obeyed the Father. He humbled himself. He washed the disciples’ feet. Remember the parable that Jesus gave to people.
The Pharisee, the religious leader says, “Oh God, look at how great I am. I thank you, Lord, that I’m not like those adulterers, like those sinners, those tax collectors who are sinning. I give tithes, I pray, I fast, and I do all these things. I thank you, Lord, that I’m righteous.”
And the other guy, the tax collector beats his heart and says, God, have mercy on me, for us, for I am a sinner. For I sinned against you. And what did Jesus say? Jesus says the one who says God have mercy on me, the tax collector – the one who the society deems to be a sinner, deems to be not saved is the one who enters heaven. That’s what Jesus said.
Get Close to God Today!
Today, if you want the grace and the mercy of God, if you want to draw close to God, empty yourself. Say, “God, I empty myself of my pride.” And I don’t mean this new age emptying of your mind, Okay? We need to fill ourselves with the mind of Jesus Christ through the Word of God.
Okay, that’s what I’m saying. We need to fill ourselves with the word of God, but we need to empty ourselves of our flesh, of our selfish desires, of temptations, sinful desires. Get rid of all that.
Purify your heart and say “God, I’m here. I humble myself. I seek Your face and pray and turn from my wicked ways.” And when you do that, God says, You will hear from heaven and heal our land, and heal you in your life and set you free. And to give you freedom, because that’s what Jesus has done for us through the cross.
God, I thank You for the person who is reading this, who wants to draw close to You. I pray Holy Spirit that You speak to them through Your word, give them visions and dreams. Draw them to a closer relationship with You as all of us humble ourselves and seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways. And we acknowledge that You are there.
When we come into right now. Even in this prayer, we know that You’re here listening to us. So God, help us to live a life that’s pleasing to You and help us to always be able to grow closer to You so that we can uplift the name of Jesus in our lives. We need Your Holy Spirit. We honor You, God, we bless Your holy name, in Jesus name we pray. Amen.
