"I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me." Galatians 2:20
Confessions of a Lonely Christian

If you’re a Christian and sometimes you feel a little bit out of place, you feel like you’re walking alone, I want to encourage you in this blog post that you are NOT alone.

Sometimes we have these thoughts,

“How come I’m not fitting in with the culture?”

“Why is it that they like those movies and they like those hobbies and the things that they do, and yet I find no interest in them?”

“Is there something wrong with me?”

As some people would call it, “Go and get a life!” My answer to that is praise God, our life is in Christ! If you don’t find joy, if you don’t find comfort, if you don’t find peace in the entertainment of the world and in the music that they play, then perhaps you’re just walking on the narrow path that leads to a life that Jesus talks about.

My Hobby is God

I’m not saying that you can’t watch TV or listen to music. But as you know, there are many things in our world today that are simply against God, blasphemous people, and those that teach doctrines and ideas that go against the teachings of the bible.

Years ago, a youth had to ask me, we’re having a meal, “Hey, Emmanuel, what are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your private time?” And this was about 10 years ago. When I get home, have a whole binder of DVDs that I bought from the ministry that teaches and empowers Christians on how to heal the sick called John G. Lake Ministries by Curry Blake.

I was plugging all these DVDs and learned how to heal the sick because it was new to me. I just got baptized with the Holy Spirit and I want to learn how to do what Jesus says, to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and cast out demons. Because in the church and nomination that I grew up in, I never learned anything like that.

So many times I look for the time that I can go home. And as I started watching these DVDs, I went on and prayed for people. I started to see God healing people through my hands that I never thought were possible.

And so it was a little awkward, but I told the youth pastor, “You know, I really don’t do anything else other than watch DVD on things about God when I go home.”  And he says, “You know, it’s okay, you can say my hobby is God.” It sounded a little weird at that time, to be honest.

And I’m not saying that every single day for the past 10 years, that has been my practice. But many times when I’m distracted, and when I’m walking away, the Holy Spirit speaks to my ear and speaks to our heart. If you have ears to hear, come back to Me. We have better plans for you.

Choose God, Always

In James 4:4, it says

“Friendship with the world is enmity with God.”

James 4:4

Jesus says you cannot serve two masters because either you love one or hate the other. He was talking about money and God. But you can use that principle on many other things, whether it is your family, your job, your status, your recognition, whatever it is. We don’t want to place anything, our hobbies, our desires, our love for anything else over God.

And many times when we find ourselves in that predicament and we’re going to come back to God and say, “God, we look unto You. Help us to change our lives and put the focus back to where You are because we live for an eternal kingdom and our citizenship is in heaven.”

Did you know that?

This is why in the Book of Hebrews 11:35-38, it says that

“The people who follow God were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.”

“Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings. Some have chains in imprisonments, some were stoned, and some were sawn in two. They were tempted, they were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins being destitute, afflicted, and tormented of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and dense and caves of the earth.”

Hebrews 11:35-38

And society and culture would look at them and say, “Look at these guys. They’re wackos, they’re insane!” But God says that these are the people whom the world is not worthy to be counted together with, because they look unto God and the eternal kingdom and not the kingdom of this world.

Spiritual Discipline

So I encourage you, continue pressing into the things of God. Don’t find it weird if you just want to hear a sermon, if you just want to memorize some scriptures, if you just want to put on some worship music. You’re not weird because the Holy Spirit is working in your heart.

Jesus says,

“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

Luke 6:45

If your life is filled with the things of God, filled with the word of God, then out of your mouth and out of your life will flow the grace of God, the power of God, and the promises of God.

Today, it is unfortunate to look at the church and many times people are struggling, whether it’s with depression, whether it’s suicidal thoughts, whether there are certain things you want to overcome, we all have things that we have to deal with. Some people think that by going to church on Sunday or having a pastor pray over them or someone going to the preacher to lay hands on them, that other problems will be solved.

But to some extent, that may be true. Some people need to get deliverance to have demons cast out of their lives. But there’s also a part of personal devotion to God, putting in spiritual discipline, to pray, fast, and seek God, to read His word, to memorize it, to confess the word. These are the things that cannot come by someone laying hands and praying a prayer over you. It doesn’t matter who that pastor is, who that great spiritual leader is, because only God himself can touch your life and give you a complete makeover by the power of the Holy Spirit.

So I encourage you and me today. Let us be the people that God says, “These are my people, they saw Me, they pursue Me, they walk with Me.” They didn’t just claim to have some faith in their mouth, but they actually walked it out.

And in times when we fail and we fall back and get distracted, God, we ask that You help us to focus back on You because this world is dying. And those who are around us need to know the saving grace and the knowledge of Jesus Christ. And we will not sit by and watch the world burn in our comfort, in our hobbies, in our entertainment, especially when these things have absolutely no eternal value.

Only spirit guidance to not be legalistic about this, but to follow Your lead so that we can truly uplift the name of Jesus in their lives until He returns.

We give You thanks, God in Jesus’ name, Amen.
