Five ways to live a holy life.
And the reason why you and I want to do this is because in Hebrews 12:14, it says
“Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”
Jesus, in the sermon on the mount, says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)
And the Book of Song says, “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? He has clean hands and a pure heart and has not lifted up his soul to an idol.” (Psalm 24:3-4)
Over and over again, the bible tells us that we have to live a holy life because God has purchased us with His blood for a purpose. He didn’t just die on the cross so that one day we can go to heaven and now live however the way we want, lukewarm and the things of the world. He wants us to live for Him. And so that’s your heart’s desire to honor God, to live a life that’s pleasing to Him, and to live holy.
In this video, we’re going to talk about these five ways, starting with number one.
1. Living a Holy Life is God’s Idea
First, you have to understand that living a holy life is not our idea. It’s God’s idea. The bible says, “Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16)
Many Christians today understand that they have positional holiness because there are so many sermons talking about, “Oh well, Jesus imputes his righteousness to you and so you’re holy.” Now, that is true that there is positional holiness where Jesus washes clean with His blood because when we repent and trust in Him, we can earn salvation. He gives us His righteousness, he washes us clean. That is positional holiness, that he sees us perfect.
However, there’s also something called practical holiness, meaning in our daily lives. Peter calls it be holy in all your conduct. (1 Peter 1:15)
And that’s why when you read the new testament, you’re going to see Paul, you’re going to see the new testament writers, and even Jesus talking about how to conduct our lives here on earth. And here’s the benefit of pursuing the life of holiness.
You’re going to hear God more, you can come into His presence more and you can experience Him because your heart will not condemn you. Because in the Bible, John says “If our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.” (1 John 3:21)
Just a while ago, I wanted to restart an accountability group that I had with a bunch of guys that we had in university time. We just ask each other difficult and honest and blunt question saying,
“Hey, have you kept pure?”
“Have you looked at pornography?”
“Have you done things that you shouldn’t do?”
And then we also talk about other issues we have in life and we pray for one another and confess our sins and be healed.
But years later, after we all got married, have kids, and have a life, we kind of fell away from doing that. But just some time ago, I had this idea of conviction in my heart. Hey, maybe I should restart this. And so I messaged all those guys on WhatsApp and say, “Hey guys, how are you doing? Had this idea to want to put this group together again so we can pray for one another and encourage each other in the faith.”
And guess what? Here’s the confirmation that God had. One of the letters that I got from a child that is supported through Compassion Canada. She wrote with the letter little drawings. Hebrews 12:14 this is literally the very first time I’ve seen a child quote Hebrews 12:14 to me and it was a confirmation that God says, yeah man, you’ll do it and go pursue a lifestyle of holiness because without which no one will see the Lord.
And I can tell you today, God is calling you. You don’t need some kind of special confirmation. You have the bible to tell you, to pursue peace with all men and holiness and live the way that God wants you to live because you are a new breed of people and we’re the bride of Christ.
When Jesus comes back, we are holy and blameless, not only positionally but also practically. And I’m not talking about legalism, how you have to cut your hair a certain way, whether you can wear this or not wear that and a certain length of a dress and what color you can and cannot wear.
We’re not talking about legalism. We’re talking about using the principles of the bible and implementing them in our lives and also seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that we can honor God and not honor some kind of rules of conduct that doesn’t even come from our heart.
We want to do it the right way with genuine love and faith in god.
2. It is the Position of the Heart That Enables Us to Live a Holy Life
And that’s why number two, you have to understand it is the position of the heart that enables us to live a holy life, not just in what we can do and what we cannot do. Yes, there are certain things that the bible talks about.
Paul talks about what we should do, what we shouldn’t do. Peter talks about it. But if you just don’t do things as some kind of rules in a book, and you’re not doing them with a genuine love for God, then it’s not going to avail you anything. Paul even says in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, “If I give everything that I have, and I even give my body to be burned, but I don’t have love, I have nothing, I gain nothing. And I am nothing.”
So may it be our heart’s cry today and say “God, I want to be that special people that are zealous for your good works because I know that I’m a royal priesthood, a holy nation, called by You. To honor you, not in the filth and things of this world, but in holiness, in a way that pleases You because You have changed me from within, so I can live a new life in You.”
3. Read the Word of God
Number three, you have to read the Word of God. If you don’t read the Word of God, you’re not going to understand the standards that God has for us as Christians.
If you buy furniture from IKEA and you don’t look in the manual, you’re not going to be able to put it together, especially if it’s very complicated. I can tell you many times I’ve actually tried to not use the manual. I told my wife, “Listen, it’s very simple. It’s just plug-and-play. I’ll be able to fix it.” and guess what? At the end of the day, my wife has to come here and be like, “Let me look at the manual and fix it sweetheart.”
In this life, we can fix furniture. But if we’re talking about eternity, if we’re talking about the day we stand before Jesus and we say, “Oh God, I never really knew that You actually wanted me to live holy.” and he’s going to say, “Well, why don’t you know that I wanted you to live holy and living life that is pleasing to Me?”
What is the excuse that you and I are going to have? Jesus is going to say, “Have you not read My word? You have five bibles in your home but have you opened them?”
May it be that we love not only the things of God but also His words so that we read them every day so that we can honor Him.
You need to read the New Testament, especially talking about how we are to conduct ourselves here in this life. Because Peter says, “Knowing that everything is going to be burned up, how should we ought to live our lives in holy context?” (Peter 3:11)
4. Only Fear God, Not Men
And number four, as you’re pursuing his life of holiness, you have to learn to fear God only and not men. Because I’m going to tell you they’re going to be many, many people coming to you and say, “Oh brother, oh sister! Now you enter into legalism. Now you’re trying to have works in your salvation and you can’t add anything into your salvation, only Christ alone, only blood alone.” and all that kind of jargon.
Let me tell you something. Of course, we know we’re saved by grace through faith. When we repent and trust in Jesus, that is how we’re saved. But many Christians today, they want to live their lives as if they’re the thief on the cross. They only confess Jesus and they enter into paradise. That’s what Jesus said, He was saved.
But you and I today, we can’t live our lives here as if every day we’re the thief on the cross. We don’t have to do anything, we just confess them. We can live our lives however way we want. That is not how the bible teaches how we should live our lives. And so when men smear at you, when they call you names, when they say you’re trusting your own works, first, look into your heart. Are you really doing that? Or are you really looking into Jesus Christ who has saved you and transformed you?
And out of that gratitude, out of that thankfulness, you say “God, today I want to honor You and I want to show You that I love You. I want to show You that my faith is genuine by living a life that pleases You.” If that is you, then do not fear men, because God is on your side.
On the day of judgment, we’ll stand before Jesus and not in front of those other people.
5. Jesus is Going to Reward Those Who Truly Love Him
Number five, may we also be motivated by knowing that one day, Jesus is going to give his reward to all those who love Him.
There are many crowns that the bible talks about – the crown of life, crown of righteousness, the incorruptible crown. I don’t even know what that means, but I just believe it’s going to be great because if Jesus says so, I believe it and Jesus says this, “Behold, I am coming quickly and My reward is with me to give to each one according to his works.” (Revelation 22:12)
One day, you and I, we’re going to stand before the judgment seat of Christ and our works here on this earth is going to go through fire and it’s going to test to see if our lives will build on wood, hay, and stubble, things of the world or whether our lives are built on precious stones, gold, and silver.
Those who endured the test of fire will receive the reward from God. And so may it be a caution and encouragement for those of us who follow Jesus, knowing that if we truly believe in Jesus, we should have a pattern of good works as the bible talks about. That our lives should resemble very different than the way that the world live their lives versus the way that God wants us to live our lives. Because if you’re still living a cardinal or lukewarm life in your faith, the bible has no guarantee and no promise for you that you will enter the kingdom of heaven.
And so Father, I pray to everyone who is watching and myself that every day You draw us closer and closer to You. And Holy Spirit, I pray that every day You help us to hear what you’re speaking to us, convict our hearts and the things in our lives that are not pleasing to You and Jesus. I pray Your blood to wash us clean always so that we can walk on a narrow path that leads to life until we see You. We love You and we glorify Your name. We thank you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Go ahead and share this blog post with other people and go share the gospel with other people, with your family, because Jesus is coming!
We want to be ready when he returns in love and faith in Him. In Jesus name.
God bless you!
